About the blog :
“A work in progress” references my art, my life, my life as an artist. This blog will serve to mile-mark the journey.
Artistic Statement
I am a seer, though neither prophetic nor mystical. My role as a painter demands that I channel shadow and light, flesh and spirit, through the inanimate materials of pigment and oil, with focused observation. As a seer, I want to conjure the spirits, find the vitality in the objects that capture my attention and transfer that life to my canvas. I am primarily interested in the human figure, for it carries in it the weight of the human experience, both individual and collective.
My current work centers on this role of observer. My paintings reflect my interest in the human story through portraiture and visual narrative. Yet, looking at my work, I feel as if my seeing is still as through a fog. I am a practitioner, but not yet polished in my art. I have a burning desire to obtain the training I need in order to manifest visibly the images that play in my mind.
I seek to grow in my abilities, but also to explore what makes us human — the relationships we have with one another, ourselves, the ideas that exist among us, and the stories that we tell. As an artist, I wish to incorporate symbolic imagery and thereby affirm in our humanity the spirit which creates meaning.
With a background in art education, and four years of teaching kindergarten through high school under my belt, I express my gratitude for life and passion for learning best when I become a conduit of the knowledge and experiences that I gain. Personal growth drives my inner motivations and helping others achieve their own creative goals is extremely satisfying as a lifelong vocation. As an artist and teacher, it is important to me to remain open, aware, and actively engaged in the learning process.
