Level 1 Week 3 and 4 September 29, 2008

Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays (Figure drawing)

The end of last week and this week, we started doing 10 second gestures, then 30 second, then 1 minute. We progressed to 5 minute block-ins/wipe outs.

For the block-ins, we utilize what we are learning in still life class and apply the principles of abstracting the light and shadow shapes to the figure.

Wednesdays (still life)

Week 3 we continued still life set ups in two tones.

Week 4 we progressed from two tone value drawings to four tones. We started with a black object on a white cloth, then a white object on a black cloth. We compared the relative values of the tones on the light side of the object, the form shadow of the object, the light on the cloth, and the cast shadow from the object on the cloth.

Yay! I started the Professional Program at Studio Incamminati. I will try to document class notes as well as post pictures.

Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays (Figure drawing)

1 minute gesture drawings

Materials: Strathmore charcoal paper in moonstone toned with soft vine charcoal, viva paper towel for wipeouts

Objectives:

  • Keep movement and energy in the gesture
  • Work through the whole arm
  • Simplify at first with 3 or 4 bold strokes that describe the major movements of the figure from top to bottom
  • Build by finding smaller angle relationships and landmarks of the body (shoulders, chest, hips, groin).

Tips: Keep easel upright, place paper with eyeline about 2/3 of the way up to capture better perspective. Use longer pieces of charcoal or a charcoal holder. Ask yourself, “Where’s the top and bottom? What’s the basic bend of the figure? What’s the dominant thrust/action line? Am I squinting to see the pose’s simplest essence? Am I keeping energy and movement in my arm?”

Wednesdays (Still life)

Objectives:

  • Learning to “abstract” from nature
  1. Remove or separate
  2. Consider apart from application
  3. Summarize
  • Draw using only straight lines and angles
  • Block in shapes of light and dark
  • Wipe out lights
  • Relate proportions

Hierarchy of wipe-out tools
1. paper towel
2. t-shirt cloth
3. chamois
4. kneaded eraser

Start with simple objects: ball, boxes, vase

Fridays (Bargue drawing)

Materials: 2B or 4B graphite, sketch paper, eraser, copies of Bargue exercises

Objectives:

  • To learn how to “lock in” a drawing
  • Precision in lines, angles, distances, proportional relationships

Tips: “Drawing is a series of corrections. Analyze, identify what is the most off, and correct that. Continually move around the drawing, circle around and relate each part to the whole. Ask yourself, ‘Is the drawing ready for new information or do I just need to take what I already have and make it better?’”
