September/October syllabus October 2, 2007

I promised to post the syllabus I am creating for my private art student. Of course, since teaching is organic and adapts to the student, this syllabus is also a work in progress and subject to change.

September 18th
Meet and discuss goals, structure of art time, materials to use. (Decided on drawing focus first, acrylic as the painting medium.)

September 25th
FOCUS of the week: ANGLES and MEASUREMENTS
Session activities: Go over copies (10 min), practice 2D with copy of Edward Hopper drawing page 162 (45 min). Practice 3D by drawing chair or folding tray table or room interior (45 min).
Handouts or materials needed: sketchpad, pencil, copies of “Keys to Drawing” chapter 3 and Hopper sketch, Plexiglass and vis a vis markers.
Week’s home practice: More as desired

October 2nd
FOCUS of the week: SHAPES – Outer and Inner
Sesson activities: Pencil work 2D photo warm up (20 min), Demo (20 min.), Envelope and alignment method with plexiglass practice (20 min), 3D work on objects that have both interesting inner and outer shapes (2- 30 min. each, still fairly geometric)
Handouts or materials needed: object photo, sketchpad, pencil, plexiglass, vis a vis markers, objects
Week’s home practice: More as desired , bring still life objects from home to work on in upcoming days

October 9th
FOCUS of the week: EDGES and CONTOURS
Session activities: Do some edge and contour exercises (3-10 min each) Revisit prior weeks’ concepts, but in a more complex context (i.e. less angular forms, more organic, curvy froms) (2 -45 min. each, still life study – try to bring these sketches to a fairly completed state and save for value studies)
Handouts or materials needed: Pencil, sketchpad, plexiglass, vis a vis, objects
Week’s home practice: More as desired

October 16th
FOCUS of the week: VALUE STUDIES building upon the previous drawing concepts
Session activities: 2D work, value scale and value practice (45 min), then 3D work using charcoal, use last week’s sketches for drawing reference purposes (drawing 30 min, shading 45 min).
Handouts or materials needed: Charcoal, sketchpad, sketches

October 23rd
FOCUS of the week: Draw and Paint – concepts into practice (monochromatic only)
Session activities: intro to painting and 2D value study with paint (1 hour) 3D value with paint, use last week’s charcoal value studies for reference (1 hour)
Handouts or materials needed: Charcoal, brushes,
acrylic burnt umber and white, gesso board, value studies

October 30th
FOCUS of the week: Draw and Paint – concepts into practice (monochromatic only)
Session activities: new object from starting charcoal layout to value study with paint
Materials: brushes, acrylic burnt umber and white, gesso board
